One thing that changed when tatay Anciong was in prison was the distance. As you might have noticed, our range is much closer than the rest of the Balintawak. One reason for this is that, the close range will lead to maximization of the development of the student in preparation for bare hand fighting or anything in between. Another difference is that from day one, we already hit the students, but with controlled measured force. This is necessary so that the student will not develop the so-called false sense of security. And it is a nervous system adaptation, so you will need the hits in order for your body/system to adjust, be it speed, timing, body mechanics which is within the comfort zone of the student. In Tabimina Balintawak, we will not say, this is how you should block a strike either with good form or what not, because in actual fight all this so-called form will be thrown out the window. When Sir Bob teaches, he just tells the students to block or attack with precision. If he feels it looks awkward or feels that they can be exploited, then he tells you to adjust without compromising your body posture. The hits is the communication tool used by Anciong in passing his art the right way, but most people did'nt quite understand it. Like Sir Bob will say, "Imitate me as I imitate Anciong". So to answer your question, he is pretty much teaching what tatay Anciong had left him. He is compelled to teach Anciong's ways. Like he said, "It is high time to pass on the skills taught to him by the Grandmaster."
We all kept saying that if you learn Balintawak you will keep on evolving. Most groups tend to deny that tatay Anciong evolved in the prison. Meaning to say, the rest of us can evolve, but the founder could not evolve? To say that GM Bobby Tabimina did not evolve would be a lie. As far as I know, he told me that he changed the angle of striking like the lower leg 8, 9 to the stomach mainly because of the range that were in and also this is to prepare the students in blocking uppercuts, lower body strikes and more importantly knife attacks. Another thing that he changed is the hits which is controlled measured force. A strong hit to the body and a weak hit to the body, if it contains the same speed, pressure and intent, will produce the same effect which is productive REACTION. The boxing application, the knife fighting training, the dulo-dulo techniques, bare hand fighting, these are some of the evolution by Sir Bob, made possible thru tatay Anciong's teachings.
It's hard to explain, but it is easier to understand when you play. You have to feel it, you have to play with GM Bobby Tabimina to know the difference.
Thanks.
